Metformin Side Effects for Pregnant and Nursing Women

metformin side effects for pregnant and nursing women

While metformin is, without a doubt, a revolutionary approach in controlling type 2 diabetes, you always have to take into account that it’s a relatively new drug, as it was approved by FDA only in 1995, so the full extent of metformin side effects is not yet know.

Studies regarding the safety of metformin treatments for pregnant women are still under way. There have been indications that this medicine is effective for the control of gestational diabetes, and, in fact, may be even safer than insulin. However, there is no long-term research yet, to determine whether this will have any impact on the child later in life.

There is also no evidence that metformin may be present in breast milk, and thus should not be transferred to a child from a nursing mother. Still, it is better to discuss your options with your physicians, and to cut the treatment at the earliest signs of side effects; or, if interrupting the treatment is not possible, to avoid nursing.
